First settled in the early 1800s, Scarborough was both a farming and industrial centre in the "Golden Horseshoe". Scarborough grew up along the shores of Lake Ontario, and has some beautiful shoreline parks and bluffs, and away from the Lake, Scarborough has both wonderful Conservation Areas and the city's showcase Toronto Zoo. Scarborough was for many years an independent municipality, and is now part of the City of Toronto. Scarborough residents take a strong and active role in all levels of government and its administration.
